If you have that sort of endorsement from folks we idolized, and who were so important in the history of this music – and music in general — we thought, “Well, there you go.” That’s what we did. So near-identical in fact that the songs have become virtually interchangeable, swapping cans and wills, lifting lyrics from one to the other, to the extent that Mother Maybelle Carter, A.P.’s daughter, sings “will” on the version that she sang with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, in their landmark triple LP of the same name. She called us “them dirty boys.” I love that. Chet Atkins is on a track and played one of my guitars, which I liked. However, with encouragement from one of the group’s biggest fans, the legendary June Carter Cash, the recording sessions for Will the Circle Be Unbroken, Volume Two commenced in the winter of 1988, with a cast of accomplished musicians who are now considered cornerstones of Americana music. Sort of the bridge between John Lee and the Dirt Band, Gregg Allman kept “Circle” close to his heart, ever since it appeared on his first solo album. Why mess with a classic? How did you come up with the guest list, so to speak, for this one? It also introduced fiddler Vassar Clements to a wider audience. The way we viewed Circle 1 was like something untouchable – just leave it. We had only recorded a little bit with Emmylou Harris and we really wanted to work with her. OK, he then lost a little ground, but, in later years it was no surprise that it was used as the finale of his tribute show, as well as being a staple of later Allman Brothers Band shows. She was really sweet and she loved to talk about Mother Maybelle, and how much she loved us. Immerse. Charlie Rich, Marion Wiilliams, Randy Travis, Staple Singers, Buddy DiColellette Band. We were really excited about being on the track with them. Is it Stonewall Jackson? His rendition is a workmanlike acceptance of the situation, rather than any lament.
Yet, in the right hands, with the right voice, or voices, it becomes a hymn of uplift. Jerry Lee Lewis is (only) 84. Performed by Courtnee Draper and Troy Baker, the voice actors of the lead characters. Paring “Circle” back into a slick and metronomic shuffle, John Lee Hooker stamps his personality so indelibly, it seems scarcely the same song. With their classic 1972 album, ‘Will The Circle Be Unbroken’, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band staged the ultimate picking session with their bluegrass heroes. Finally, I confess to no small enjoyment from this ramshackle collective version, clearly under-rehearsed, no doubt in the assumption that Johnny Cash would pull together the best-known song of his mother-in-law, Mother Maybelle. All gone.

Bob Carpenter was like, “I didn’t get to play on the first one! I won’t say which version of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” I heard, beyond it was one of these, but it caught my ear and set me thinking, feeling the song. Hooker probably came by the song as a child, the youngest of 11, home-schooled in a house where the only music allowed was religious. Here, as offered by the spoiler above, it is Mother Maybelle Carter herself, picking up the first and third verses, and adding autoharp to the acoustic swell of that high and lonesome sound. Who is on the cover of Will the Circle Be Unbroken, by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band et al.?

But then I’m reading an article in a magazine, and it was a “desert island disc” thing, talking about the records that you’ve gotta have, and he mentioned Will the Circle Be Unbroken. I’d never met Bruce Hornsby but I was a huge fan of his music. That was the original thought from a few members of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band when the idea was presented to record a sequel to their seminal 1972 album, Will the Circle Be Unbroken. I heard “Every Little Kiss” on the radio and it just blew me away. We were unloading the truck and they started carrying gear in, and ended up sort of hiding behind the bleachers, and when the show started, came out and watched the show.

The winter of ’88, we started making calls.
